The five types of clip-ins
All five are available in every length and every color. They differ in how flat the weft base lies and how easily it can be hidden:
- Normal Clip-In — the standard version, the most frequently ordered.
- Invisible clip-in — designed for an especially inconspicuous weft base.
- Seamless clip-in — flat-lying weft base, intended for finer hair.
- U clip-in — a single U-shaped piece instead of a continuous row.
- Halo / flip-in band — is placed over the head instead of being clipped in, completely without clips.
Not sure which one suits your hair? Message us on WhatsApp beforehand, it costs nothing and takes five minutes.
Texture: from straight to curly
Clip-ins aren’t only available in straight. If you wear your natural hair wavy or curly, choose a texture to match — otherwise the difference stands out as soon as you wear your hair down:
- Straight
- Slightly wavy
- Normal wavy
- Strongly wavy
- Permed
- Curly
Because it’s real hair, every texture can also be straightened or curled afterwards — with heat protection and preferably at 160 to 180 degrees.
What you should keep in mind
Clips need some natural hair to hold on to. With very fine or very short hair, they sit less securely and may show. Take them out for sleeping and for sports. If you want length every day and long-term, you’re better off with Tape Extensions or Bondings.
Care
Comb gently, wash mildly, let air dry. Because the set isn’t worn every day and isn’t washed along with your hair, clip-ins last much longer with good care than methods that are worked into the hair.
What does the application cost?
Nothing. You put clip-ins in yourself, so there are no labor costs at a salon. You only pay for the hair. That makes them the most affordable method of all for getting started. Our cost calculator works out what the hair costs.
Payment
You can pay by invoice or in installments via Klarna, as well as by PayPal, credit card, Apple Pay or bank transfer.
Putting in clip-in extensions yourself
Clip-ins are the only method you really do yourself — no heat, no glue, nothing that stays attached to your natural hair. Once you get the hang of it, you need five to ten minutes in the evening. The first time it takes longer, and that’s normal.
Important to know first: Clip-ins go into dry hair. In damp hair, the clips slip and the weight pulls more. Freshly washed, completely smooth hair is also not ideal, because the clips can’t find any grip in it. They sit best in second-day hair or with a little root powder at the spots where the clips go.
What you need: a tail comb for sectioning, two to three hair clips, a hand mirror for the back of your head. Nothing more.
Step by step
- Start at the very bottom. Section the hair horizontally just above the nape, around earlobe height or lower. Clip the upper hair forward. The section that stays down must be wide enough to fully cover the clip-in.
- Give the root some grip. Backcomb the root very lightly, just two or three strokes with the comb. That’s the difference between a clip-in that stays put all evening and one that slips after two hours.
- Middle clip first. Open all the clips, place the middle one and snap it shut, then the two outer ones. If you start on the outside, you pull the piece crooked. The clips grip the backcombed root, not the scalp and not the lengths.
- Two fingers’ distance from the hairline. Too high up, and the edge shows through when you move your head. Too low, and the clip-in hangs and peeks out at the sides. And always leave one finger’s distance from the hairline at the side, otherwise it will flash out near the ear.
- Work your way up. Section the next part about two to three centimeters above the first. Enough natural hair must remain between the rows to cover the one underneath.
- The sides last. The narrow clip-ins go above the ears, at about temple height. Here, less is more — one narrow piece per side almost always suffices.
- Blend. Let all of your natural hair fall down and comb it together. Finally, straighten or wave the ends together once so that your natural hair and the extensions move in the same way. This very last step makes the transition invisible — not the color alone.
The complete guide with pictures can be found in Putting in clip-in extensions yourself.
How many pieces do you get?
A set doesn’t consist of pieces that are all the same width: wide clip-ins cover surface area at the back, narrow ones sit flexibly at the sides and around the face. With us, you put your set together yourself — you can shift the quantities, for example seven narrow pieces instead of two wider ones.
- 100 g — around 70 cm total width
- 125 g — around 85 cm
- 150 g — around 95 cm
- 200 g — around 120 cm
- 250 g — around 145 cm
For short hair: the three rules
Short hair doesn’t mean clip-ins won’t work. It means three things apply more strictly.
- Place them lower. The shorter your hair, the lower the first row has to sit. What you can’t cover must not lie underneath.
- Less length at once. A jump from a bob to 60 centimeters rarely looks real. Twenty to thirty centimeters more than your natural length is realistic.
- Have them cut. A set ends in a straight edge at the bottom, your short haircut doesn’t. The transition only comes about when someone works the extensions into your cut. That costs little and makes the biggest visual difference.
The five most common mistakes
- Placed too high up. The most common mistake of all. If you tilt your head forward and the edge becomes visible, it sits too high.
- Everything at one height. Two rows directly on top of each other create a thick step. Leave two to three centimeters of space, and nothing stands out.
- Too close to the hairline at the side. When you brush your hair back, it flashes out. One finger’s distance inward solves this.
- Sleeping with clip-ins. Never. The clips press into your scalp and pull on the same spots all night. Clip-ins are made to be taken out in the evening — that’s their whole advantage.
- Always the same spots. If you wear them daily, shift the rows by one to two centimeters from time to time. Constant tension on the same section is the only way clip-ins can harm your natural hair.
Braids, ponytails and curls
For a ponytail, you don’t put the clip-ins flat at the nape, but in a semicircle above the spot where the ponytail is to sit. Tie it first, then wrap a narrow piece around the hair tie and conceal it.
For braided hairstyles, the rule is: as few pieces as possible, but wide ones — otherwise lots of small clips will show in the braid.
Curls work perfectly well in human hair with a curling iron or flat iron, always with heat protection and preferably at 160 to 180 degrees. An advantage many overlook: style the clip-ins on the table before you put them in. It’s faster, more even, and you don’t burn your fingers.
Frequently asked questions about clip-in extensions
How long do clip-in extensions last?
One to two years with occasional wear. There’s no bond that grows out, so there’s no move-up appointment either — that’s the big difference compared to all other methods.
Do clip-ins damage natural hair?
Only with constant tension on the same spot. If you wear them daily, shift the rows by one or two centimeters now and then. And never sleep in them.
Do clip-ins work with short hair?
Yes, with the three rules above: place them lower, realistically twenty to thirty centimeters more than your natural length, and have them worked into your cut.
Do I need a hairdresser appointment?
Not for putting them in — you do that yourself. An appointment only makes sense once at the beginning, to have the set worked into your cut.
Can I color clip-ins?
Toning darker is possible to a limited extent, bleaching is not. Extensions no longer receive any nourishment from the scalp, so every chemical treatment is a one-sided strain. The safe way: decide on the color beforehand — if necessary as a custom color based on your photo or a strand you send in.
What lengths are available?
Nineteen lengths in five-centimeter steps, from 40 to 130 centimeters — including the extra-long lengths that are hardly available elsewhere. Where your desired length ends is shown at Extensions lengths from 40 to 130 cm.
💡 Reading Tip
To go with Clip-ins:
How Clip-in Extensions are put in
- The natural hair is parted horizontally, starting at the bottom of the back of the head. The base of the section is lightly teased so the clips have something to grip.
- The clips are opened, placed close to the scalp and snapped shut. Wide pieces go in the middle, narrow ones at the sides.
- Work your way up weft by weft and lay the top hair over them. After a few times, this takes five to ten minutes.
- Clip-ins are taken out for sleeping and sports. Seamless and Invisible are the first choice for fine hair because the base lies flat.
How long Clip-Ins last
Two numbers you need to keep apart: The attachment lasts until your own hair has carried it too far down, about one centimeter per month. The hair itself lasts significantly longer and is reused when it is moved up. You pay for the hair once and for the labor several times.
| Bond, until moving up | Hair, with good care |
|---|---|
| new every day, without a salon and without labor costs | significantly longer than sewn-in methods, because the set isn't washed along with your hair and isn't worn every day |
Extra lengths: 125 and 130 centimeters
With us, the selection doesn't stop at 60 or 70 centimeters. All lengths from 40 to 130 centimeters are available in five-centimeter steps — including 100, 110, 120, 125 and 130. You select them in the configurator just like any other length. No special request, no surcharge for special wishes, no extra waiting time on top.
What you should plan for with extra length
- More weight. The same fullness needs significantly more grams at 120 centimeters than at 45. For a full look from 85 centimeters, 150 to 250 grams is typical depending on hair density, not 100.
- Don't skimp on fullness at the ends. The longer the hair, the more noticeable it is when the ends get thinner. From 100 centimeters, 80 or 95 to 100 percent is worth it.
- The price rises evenly, in fixed steps of 5 centimeters each — not in leaps and bounds just because it's called "custom length."
- Care becomes more important. Very long hair gets the least of what the scalp provides at the ends. Wash two to three times a week, and always apply conditioner to the lengths afterward.
Caring for Clip-Ins
What do I wash extensions with?
Only with a sulfate-free and alcohol-free shampoo, ideally one made for extensions or dry hair. Brush through thoroughly before washing, use lukewarm water, and stroke the shampoo from the roots to the ends instead of rubbing, then rinse thoroughly.
How often should I wash them?
Two to three times a week. Extensions get no supply from the scalp and can't regrease themselves. Washing daily is the fastest way to ruin a set.
Conditioner and treatment
After every wash, apply conditioner only to the lengths and ends, never to the bonds. Use a mask or treatment once or twice a week. Silicone-free is better.
Drying and blow-drying
Gently squeeze out the water, don't rub. Let it dry until towel-dry first, then blow-dry on medium heat, always with heat protection and from top to bottom. Never go to bed with wet hair.
Brushing
Only use an extensions brush or soft bristles, and gently detangle several times a day, working from the ends upward. Don't comb wet hair.
At night
Braid loosely or tie into a ponytail, sleep on silk or satin, and detangle in the morning from the bottom up.
Sun, chlorine, sea
Avoid long sunbathing, chlorinated water and seawater. Braid your hair when swimming and rinse it thoroughly afterward.
Frequently asked questions about Clip-in Extensions
How much do 80 cm Clip-In Extensions cost?
At EchtHaar Direkt, clip-ins made from 100% human hair in 80 cm with 100 g start at €397.97, and with 125 g at €487.30. How much hair you need depends on your hair density: for a visible lengthening with normal density, 125 to 150 g; for thick hair, 150 to 200 g. Every set is made to order in your color.
Can I order long clip-ins on invoice?
Yes, with Klarna you can pay by invoice or in installments. PayPal, credit card, Apple Pay and bank transfer are also available. At checkout, the payment method is called "Klarna (Rechnung, Ratenkauf oder Sofortüberweisung)"; which of these options are shown to you is decided by Klarna. We don't add any surcharge to the price for Klarna. All Klarna options: echthaardirekt.de/extensions-mit-klarna/
How much do 100 g human hair Clip-In Extensions cost?
At EchtHaar Direkt, 100 g clip-ins made from 100% human hair cost from €210.69 in 40 cm, from €304.33 in 60 cm and from €397.97 in 80 cm, each in straight with 50% fuller ends. Invisible, Seamless and U Clip-In cost slightly more. Every set is made to order.
Where do 50 or 60 centimeters end on me?
At a height of 165 centimeters, 50 cm ends roughly at the chest and 60 cm roughly at the waist. If you're taller, every length sits higher up.
Which clip-in extensions suit fine hair?
For fine hair, Seamless Clip-ins are a good fit: they have a flat-lying base and are designed for finer hair. Not sure which type suits your hair? Message us on WhatsApp beforehand, it's free and takes five minutes.
Are there clip-in extensions with curls?
Yes. In the configurator, you choose the structure from straight through light, medium and heavily wavy to permanent wave and curly. Heavy permanent waves and curls are created chemically. You can also curl straight human hair Clip-ins yourself, using heat protection and preferably at 160 to 180 degrees.
Can I put in clip-ins myself, and how long does it take?
Yes, that's the whole point of the method. No salon, no labor costs, you only pay for the hair. The first time it takes 20 to 30 minutes because you're still finding the spots. Once you know your rows, it takes five to ten minutes. All you need is a tail comb, two or three hair clips and a hand mirror.
Are extensions also available in 120 or 130 cm?
Yes. With us, all lengths from 40 to 130 centimeters can be selected in five-centimeter steps, including 125 and 130. This is not a special request, but a standard option in the configurator. From 85 centimeters, you should allow for roughly 150 grams for fine hair, 200 grams for normal hair and 250 grams for thick hair per extension, so that the length also looks full.
Can you see the clips?
Not if enough of your own hair lies over the row of clips. With very fine or very short hair, clips can show. Seamless has a flat base without a seam ridge, Invisible has an especially thin, often transparent base.
Where can I buy Seamless Clip-in Extensions?
At EchtHaar Direkt, you choose Seamless Clip-in in the configurator: seamless, flat base, 100% human hair from Vietnam, 40 to 130 cm, from 100 g, in over 70 colors or a custom color matched to a photo. Seamless costs a little more than regular Clip-ins and, like every set, is made to order after you place your order.
Can I sleep with clip-ins in?
No. Clip-ins are taken out in the evening, which protects your natural hair and the set.
How often and how do I wash clip-ins?
Every 15 to 20 wears, and never on your head. Take the set off and wash it separately in a water bath with a mild, sulfate-free shampoo, gently squeeze it out and let it air-dry lying flat. Clip-ins don't come into contact with sweat or scalp oil, so washing them more often only shortens their lifespan.
How long does a clip-in set last?
Because it isn't worn daily and isn't washed along with your own hair, it lasts significantly longer than methods that are woven in. A set lasts 1 to 2 years with good care.
What is a Halo or Flip-In?
Not your own hair, but a carrier band that can be combined with any method. It sits on top of your head instead of being clipped in.
Who should choose Tape Extensions or Bondings instead?
For anyone who wants length every day and long term, without having to put it in each morning. Clip-ins are intended for evenings, weekends and getting started.
How many grams of clip-ins do I need for fine, normal or thick hair?
Clip-ins are placed at selected points, so the lower end of the quantity table is usually enough: fine hair and added density 100 g, normal density for a visible length extension 125 to 150 g, thick hair 150 to 200 g. For lengths of 100 cm and above, 200 g or more, so the length looks full at the ends.
How many pieces and clips are in a 100 g set?
You decide this yourself through the widths of 5, 10, 20 and 25 cm. Typical for 100 g: 2 × 5 cm, 2 × 10 cm and 2 × 20 cm, so six pieces, with the wide ones at the back of the head and the narrow ones at the sides. If you'd like a different split, just tell us via WhatsApp when you order.
How do I match my color?
You can find over 70 colors with photos under Hair Colors. Not sure? Send us a photo of your hair in daylight, without flash or filters, via WhatsApp. If no shade matches, we'll make a custom color based on your photo. For comparing at home, there's the color ring, and for custom colors you'll receive a photo of your finished hair for approval before shipping.
How long does delivery of Clip-ins take?
Made to measure: 10–14 business days, 12–16 business days with a custom color. Ready-made sets from In Stock ship within 1 to 3 business days. Shipping within Germany is free, Austria and Switzerland 25 euros.

😊 Besonders …”
