Also applies to wigs and hairpieces: Every colour on this page can be chosen in the same way for real hair wigs, toppers and ponytails — in a single colour, with a highlight portion, or as a custom colour according to your template. Because everything there is also made individually, you’re not bound to ready-made colour numbers. To see how a wig is made at our place, visit Real Hair Wigs in Ludwigsburg.

Can’t find your shade? Then we’ll mix it for you. For a custom colour, send us a photo in daylight or a real hair strand — both are more reliable than any screen.
Important to know: A colour code such as #6.2 is a separate colour and not the same as #6. And an ombré is not a balayage — with an ombré the transition is deliberately more pronounced, while with a balayage the highlights are placed more finely. This is the most common reason for colour complaints of all. You’ll find how to determine your undertone in Finding Your Extension Colour; for comparing at home, there’s the colour ring with original strands.
A note we’d rather give you in advance: As soon as a set contains several colours, the hair comes from several sources. Different donor heads mean different textures — such sets tangle more easily with each other and form knots more quickly. This is a property of the material, not a manufacturing defect. More on this in How to Recognise Good Hair.

Frequently asked questions about colors
Which color suits me?
The one that comes closest to your roots and lengths in daylight; for highlighted hair, rather a mix or balayage. If you’re unsure, send us a photo of your hair in daylight via WhatsApp and we’ll tell you the matching number. Instructions are available under Finding the right extension color, and dark shades with photos under brown real hair extensions.
My color isn’t included. What now?
Then you order your desired color by photo: you upload pictures of your hair, unfiltered, in daylight, and we mix the color to match it, for a small surcharge, 12 to 16 working days, with a photo for your approval before shipping.
Can I see the color on my own hair beforehand?
Yes, with the color ring: real strands in all shades to hold against your own hair, in daylight, without a screen. The images here are as true to life as possible, but every screen displays colors differently.
Are ombré, balayage and highlights available?
Yes, as a color style in the configurator: ombré and balayage as a gradient within a strand, highlighted shades as a mix. You can see examples in the section “Examples from our customers” further down this page.
Can I dye or tone the extensions later?
Going darker usually works well; lightening or bleaching does not: real hair without roots does not regenerate and becomes straw-like. It’s better to order the right color or your desired color from the start. More on this under Real hair quality.
Where can I buy ombré real hair extensions?
EchtHaar Direkt offers ombré, two-tone, three-tone and balayage made from 100% real hair, in 40 to 130 cm and for all methods. If no color matches, we produce your desired color from a daylight photo, with a approval photo before shipping.
Are very light blonde shades and ombré available?
Yes. The lightest shades include platinum blonde #60 as well as platinum blonde #PLA01 and #PLA02, plus ombré gradients, highlights and balayage. Every color is shown here with photos of real strands. If none matches, we produce the desired color from your photo. Everything about light shades: blonde real hair extensions.
Can I return extensions if the color doesn’t match?
That depends on what you ordered. Custom-made extensions and every desired color are individually produced for you, and for these there is no right of withdrawal. Ready-to-ship stock and standard items such as the color ring can be withdrawn within 14 days, as long as nothing has been fitted or worn. To make sure the color matches, for desired colors you receive a photo of your strands for approval before shipping, and to compare beforehand there is the color ring with original strands. Details can be found in the Right of withdrawal.
What if the delivered color doesn’t match?
This rarely happens, because you receive a photo of your finished strands before shipping and only then give your approval. If something isn’t right, you tell us beforehand and we adjust.
How to find your color without guessing
The images above show real hair, photographed under the same lighting. Still, every screen displays colors differently, and the lighting in your room shifts them once more. That's why one rule outweighs all others: compare color in daylight, on real hair, next to your own head. Anything else is guessing with a good feeling.
First the undertone, then the lightness
Most mistakes happen not with the lightness, but with the undertone. Two quick tests: look at the veins on your wrist in daylight. Bluish means cool, greenish means warm. And hold silver and gold up to your face: whichever makes you look fresher shows you the direction.
What the numbers and letters mean
| Part of the code | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| First number | Lightness, from 1 black to over 10 very light | 6 is dark blonde |
| Digit after the dot | Undertone, such as ashy or golden | #6.1 is not the same as #6.2 |
| Letter | Addition specific to our palette | 60C, 18C, 4Q |
Two stumbling blocks that regularly lead to questions from our customers: #6.2 is a colour in its own right, not a variant of #6. And the name matters, not the number, because several colours share the same digit. So always order by the full name.
If your hair doesn't have just one color
Hardly anyone has the same shade from root to tip. There are three ways to deal with that:
- Ombré, often written without the accent as Ombre: you specify the root colour, the length of the blend, the lengths and the tips, and the transition is deliberately visible.
- Colour duo and colour trio: two or three shades blended to exact percentages, for a mixed, multi-tonal look rather than a graduated one.
- One colour plus highlights: a base colour with a set proportion of a lighter shade.
⚠️ As soon as several colors are combined in one set, the hair comes from several sources. Different hair textures tangle together more, and small knots are to be expected and not a defect. If you want maximum smoothness, a single color is the best choice.
Frequently asked questions about color
How do I find the right color for extensions?
In daylight, on real hair, next to your own head. First determine the undertone, then the lightness, and use your lengths as your reference, not your roots. That's where the extensions will sit later.
What is the difference between Ombré and Balayage?
With ombré, the transition is deliberately distinct and runs across the full width. Balayage is a hand-painting technique done on growing hair and can only be approximated with ready-made extensions. You can find out more in our guide Balayage Extensions.
What do I do if no color matches?
Then we'll mix it for you. For a custom colour, you send us photos of your hair, taken in daylight, without flash and without filters, one each of the roots, lengths and tips.
Can I recolor extensions?
Going darker is usually possible. Going lighter is risky, because human hair extensions can no longer regenerate and quickly become straw-like. It's safer to order the right color from the start.
