Care Guide
Extensions on Vacation: Getting Through Sea, Pool, Sun and Sauna Without Damage
In short: Swimming is allowed with extensions, but not unprotected. Before going into the sea or pool, soak your hair through with clear fresh water and apply a leave-in conditioner to the lengths, tie it into a ponytail or bun, then rinse it out as soon as possible afterwards and never let chlorine or salt dry on. Sun oil and oil-based sunscreen don’t belong near the bonds, because oil softens keratin and tape adhesive. In the sauna, heat plus moisture is the worst possible combination: ponytail, towel wrapped around your head, no more than once a week, and a shower afterwards. Never sleep with wet hair. With good care, the hair itself lasts 1 to 2 years with all methods, and the attachment lasts 4 to 12 weeks depending on the method. A vacation only shortens that if you skip the rules. At EchtHaar Direkt, all extensions are made from 100% human hair, so the same care rules apply on vacation as for your own hair.
Two weeks at the beach can cost you more extensions than two months of everyday life if you get it wrong. Here’s what to do before, during and after being in the water, by method.
Before the Vacation
- Freshly applied Bondings need 24 to 48 hours without water so the keratin can harden. So don’t have them applied on the day you leave.
- Ordering new extensions: production takes 10–14 business days, with a custom color 12–16, plus about one week of buffer for shipping and application. For a summer vacation, that means: order early in spring. Sets that are available immediately ship within 1 to 3 business days.
- Check-up appointment before you leave: Bondings every 8 to 12 weeks, tapes every 4 to 8 weeks (re-tape), wefts every 6 to 8 weeks. A loose bond won’t get any better in salt water.
- Packing list: extensions brush or soft bristle brush, sulfate-free and alcohol-free shampoo, conditioner or leave-in for the lengths, heat protectant, silk pillowcase or satin sleep cap, hair ties without metal.
Sea and Pool: The Three Steps
| When | What | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Before | Soak your hair completely with clear fresh water, apply leave-in to the lengths, ponytail or bun | hair that is saturated absorbs hardly any chlorinated or salt water; tied-up strands don’t wrap around each other and don’t tangle |
| In the water | Keep your head above water if possible, don’t float for hours | chlorine and salt dry out the hair and can shift the color of blonde hair |
| Afterwards | rinse with clear water as soon as possible, wash in the evening, conditioner on the lengths, blow-dry the roots | salt or chlorine must never dry on; wet roots are where most sets get matted |
Take clip-ins out before swimming, just as you would for sports and for sleeping; they are washed separately from your head anyway. Wigs and toppers are best left at the edge of the pool; if not, soak them in clear water beforehand and wash them immediately afterwards, because chlorine and salt attack the hair and nothing grows back.
Sun, Sunscreen and Sun Oil
Direct sunlight bleaches human hair slowly but irreversibly; lightened, blonde hair takes on a warm, yellowish tone over time from sun, minerals and chlorine in the water. So avoid sunbathing for long periods with your hair down: use a ponytail, scarf or hat, and put conditioner on the lengths in the evening. Keep sun oil and oil-based sunscreen away from the roots, both when applying it to your face and with your hands in your hair: oils and silicones creep into the keratin bond and soften it, and with tapes they dissolve the adhesive.
Sauna and Steam Room
In the sauna, the same applies as with blow-drying: heat plus moisture is the worst possible combination for keratin and adhesive. If you don’t want to go without: tie your hair into a ponytail or bun, wrap a towel around your head, no more than once a week, shower lukewarm right afterwards and blow-dry the roots. Hot water directly on the bonds is off limits, even under the hotel shower.
Sports and Sweating
Sweat at the roots is like wet hair: after exercise, rinse or wash, blow-dry the roots on a low setting, and only then brush. For sports, wear a ponytail or braided style, and take clip-ins out beforehand. Bondings tolerate sports and updos best, because the weight is spread over many small points.
At Night in the Hotel
Never sleep with wet extensions; they tangle and break. Braid loosely or tie into a ponytail, and bring a silk pillowcase or satin sleep cap, because hotel bedding is usually cotton, and in the morning detangle from the bottom up.
What a Vacation Costs in Durability
| Method | Attachment lasts | Hair lasts (with good care) | Vacation rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keratin Bondings | 8 to 12 weeks until moving up | 1 to 2 years | no oil at the roots, sauna only with a towel, no water for 48 h after application |
| Tape Extensions | 4 to 8 weeks until re-tape | 1 to 2 years | sun oil and silicone dissolve the adhesive: keep the roots free of them |
| Wefts | 6 to 8 weeks until re-sewing | 1 to 2 years | ponytail in the water, blow-dry the stitching |
| Clip-ins | new every day | 1 to 2 years with occasional wear | take out before water and sports, wash separately |
With these rules, a vacation doesn’t change the durability. What can’t be repaired: dried-on salt, oil in the bond, and sleeping with wet hair. The complete care rules can be found in Human Hair Extensions Care: 7 Pro Tips, and the washing instructions in Washing Extensions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I go in the sea or pool with extensions?
Yes, but prepared: soak with clear fresh water beforehand, leave-in on the lengths, ponytail or bun, then rinse as soon as possible afterwards and never let salt or chlorine dry on.
Does sunscreen damage extensions?
Oil-based sunscreen and sun oil soften keratin bonds and dissolve tape adhesive. A leave-in conditioner makes sense on the lengths, while the roots stay free of oil.
Can I go in the sauna with extensions?
With a ponytail and a towel wrapped around your head, no more than once a week, then shower lukewarm and blow-dry the roots. Heat plus moisture is the worst possible combination for keratin and adhesive.
Do blonde extensions turn yellow on vacation?
Lightened hair takes on a yellowish tone over time from sun, minerals and chlorine in the water. Soaking before swimming, rinsing immediately afterwards and protection from long sunbathing slow this down.
What do I do with clip-ins at the beach?
Take them out before swimming and during sports, just as for sleeping. They are washed separately from your head, and the hair lasts 1 to 2 years with occasional wear.
Can I have Bondings applied shortly before my vacation?
Yes, but at least two days beforehand: freshly applied Bondings need 24 to 48 hours without water so the keratin can harden.
How long do extensions last after the vacation?
The same as before, if the rules were followed: Bondings 8 to 12 weeks until moving up, tapes 4 to 8, wefts 6 to 8 weeks; the hair itself 1 to 2 years with good care.
Bottom Line
Soak, tie up, rinse, blow-dry, no oil at the roots, don’t sleep with wet hair. Six steps, and your vacation won’t cost you any extensions.
