Bondings: Drawbacks, Risks and When Tapes, Rings or Clip-ins Are the Better Choice
In short: keratin Bondings have five real drawbacks. They are applied with heat, application takes 2 to 4 hours at the salon, removal is only possible with remover and pliers (45 to 90 minutes), they need to be moved up with fresh keratin every 8 to 12 weeks, and a strand that is too heavy for fine natural hair pulls. If you don’t want heat, choose Micro or Nano Rings; if you want to get them in and out quickly, choose Tapes; if you don’t want anything permanent, choose Clip-ins. At EchtHaar Direkt, keratin Bondings start at 184,33 €, Tapes at 191,00 € (100 g, 40 cm).
Bondings last the longest and are the least noticeable. Even so, here is everything that speaks against them, taken from our guides and conversations with customers, not from a brochure.
The five drawbacks, honestly
| Drawback | What’s behind it | What keeps it small |
|---|---|---|
| Heat during application | The keratin tip is sealed onto your natural hair with a heated clamp, at around 190 to 200 degrees, 5 to 10 mm away from the scalp. Wrong heat or too little distance does damage, the right amount does not. | an experienced stylist; without heat: Micro or Nano Rings (the same strand, just with a ring instead of keratin) |
| 2 to 4 hours of installation | Each strand is applied individually; 100 g at 1.0 g is 100 strands, at 0.5 g it is 200. | choose the right strand weight, not finer than necessary; Tapes take 30 to 60 minutes |
| Removal only at the salon | Bondings are dissolved, not pulled out: keratin remover, left on for 20 to 60 seconds, pliers, pulled off in the direction of hair growth, 45 to 90 minutes per head. Pulling them off dry or using acetone destroys natural hair. | plan for an appointment; Clip-ins come out in the evening without any tools |
| Moving up every 8 to 12 weeks | Your natural hair carries the bond down by about one centimeter per month. When moving up, the Bondings are removed, prepared, re-bonded and applied again. The hair itself lasts 1 to 2 years with good care, but you pay for the labor several times. | include the follow-up costs in your calculation; Tapes are reused with new tape, Wefts are resewn |
| Pull from the wrong strand weight | If a 1 g strand hangs from just a few fine natural hairs, it pulls, the bond slips, and the hair can break at that spot (traction alopecia with constant tension). | Rule of thumb: the strand weighs about as much as the natural hair it hangs from; for fine hair 0.3 to 0.6 g |
How much natural hair Bondings need
Every attachment needs natural hair that can cover it. For Bondings and Micro Rings, about 8 to 10 centimeters of natural hair is enough, for Tapes more like 10 to 12, for Clip-ins and Wefts 12 to 15; it really gets good from chin length. As a guideline from our guide: about twenty to thirty centimeters more than your natural length can be blended well, so chin length becomes 40 to 45 centimeters, around 50 with a blending cut; the blending cut is part of the process. Details in Extensions for short hair: from what length does it really work?.
What Bondings can’t tolerate
- Products containing silicone and oil at the roots: they creep into the keratin bond and soften it from the inside. This affects treatments, leave-in sprays, heat protectants with silicones and many dry shampoos.
- No water for the first 24 to 48 hours after application, so the keratin can harden.
- Wet hair in bed and hot blow-drying directly onto the bond.
Why strands fall out anyway and what really helps can be found in Extensions falling out: the 8 most common causes.
When Bondings are still the right choice
For anyone who wants to wear the length discreetly for months, does a lot of sport or often ties her hair up: every attachment point is smaller than a grain of rice, the weight is spread across many points, and in a high ponytail Bondings are the least noticeable. At EchtHaar Direkt they are available in seven shapes (Flat Tip, K-Tip, I-Tip, U-Tip, V-Tip, Micro Ring, Nano Ring) and twelve strand weights from 0.3 to 1.4 g. All variants can be found under Bonding Extensions.
The alternatives compared
| If you’re bothered by … | Choose … | Because … | Price from (100 g, 40 cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heat | Micro or Nano Rings | same strand, ring instead of keratin, no heat, removable at any time | 184,33 € plus 6 % for rings |
| Installation time and removal | Tape Extensions | in within 30 to 60 minutes, quickly removed with remover, reusable with new tape; 4 to 8 weeks until re-taping | 191,00 € |
| Many individual attachments | Wefts | one track instead of dozens of points, 6 to 8 weeks until resewing | 211,00 € |
| Anything permanent | Clip-ins | put them in yourself, take them out in the evening, nothing stays on your natural hair | 210,69 € |

Frequently asked questions
Are Bondings harmful to my natural hair?
Not the Bondings themselves, but too much weight on too little natural hair, wrong heat and wrong removal. With the right strand weight, an experienced stylist and removal with remover, your natural hair stays intact.
How long does it take to apply Bondings?
2 to 4 hours, because each strand is applied individually. Tapes take 30 to 60 minutes.
Can I remove Bondings myself?
Only with keratin remover and pliers, in the direction of hair growth, never pulled off dry. If you had them applied at a salon, have them removed there too (45 to 90 minutes).
How often do Bondings need to be moved up?
Every 8 to 12 weeks. The hair is reused in the process (1 to 2 years of durability with good care), and the bond gets fresh keratin.
Are there Bondings without heat?
Yes: Micro and Nano Rings. The same strand is attached with a small ring instead of keratin, without heat and removable at any time.
From what natural hair length do Bondings work?
From about 8 to 10 centimeters of natural hair, really well from chin length. For Tapes more like 10 to 12, for Clip-ins and Wefts 12 to 15 centimeters.
Which strand weight for fine hair?
0.3 to 0.6 g per strand. The strand should weigh about as much as the natural hair it hangs from.
What do Bondings cost compared to Tapes?
Keratin Bondings start at 184,33 €, Tapes at 191,00 € (each 100 g, 40 cm). With Bondings, you also pay for salon work for the application and for moving them up every 8 to 12 weeks.
Conclusion
Bondings are the method for long, discreet wear, with heat, a salon appointment and moving up as the price for it. If you don’t want one of these, Rings, Tapes or Clip-ins offer an alternative made from the same hair.
