How Much Hair Loss Is Normal With Extensions? Numbers, Warning Signs and What You Can Do
In short: Everyone loses about 50 to 100 hairs a day, with or without extensions. With extensions, these hairs don’t fall to the floor but stay caught in the bond. When you have them moved up or removed, you therefore find a clump of hair in your hand: these are the shed hairs from the whole wear period, from 8 to 12 weeks in the case of Bondings. That is normal. What is not normal: strands that fall out after only two or three weeks, broken hairs of the same length at the root, persistent pain or a receding hairline. At EchtHaar Direkt, you choose the strand thickness and quantity yourself, so that the weight suits your own hair.
The moment your stylist loosens the extensions and a tangle of hair lands on the floor frightens almost every woman the first time. Here you’ll find out what is normal, how to recognize real damage and how to keep hair loss small from the very start.
The Math Behind the Clump
Hair grows in cycles. Every day, about 50 to 100 hairs end their growth phase and fall out, usually unnoticed while brushing or washing. Without extensions, you see them in the drain or in the brush. With extensions, only one thing changes: the hairs that are held in a bond cannot fall out. They stay in the bonding, in the tape or in the stitching of the weft until the bond is loosened.
Over a wear period of 8 to 12 weeks, several thousand hairs accumulate this way, spread across all the bonds. When you have them moved up, they all come out at once. So the clump is not damage from today, but the saved-up, normal hair loss of two to three months. The longer the wear period, the bigger the clump, even with completely healthy hair.
What Is Normal and When
| When | This is normal | This is not |
|---|---|---|
| First days | A feeling of tension at the root, one or two strands coming loose | Pain that gets worse at night |
| While wearing | A few loose hairs when brushing, just like without extensions | Strands that fall out after two or three weeks, itching that doesn’t stop after two weeks |
| When moving up or removing | A clump of hair per bond, the shed hairs from the whole wear period | Broken hairs of the same length, your own hair being pulled out with the bond |
| After removal | Your own hair looks thinner for a few days because the fullness is missing | Bald patches, a hairline that recedes at the temples |
Five Warning Signs of Real Hair Loss
- Broken hairs of the same length at the root. Shed hairs have a root and different lengths. Hairs that all end at the same spot are broken, right at the bond. This is hair breakage caused by tension.
- Strands that fall out after two or three weeks. A bond lasts 4 to 8 weeks with tapes, 6 to 8 with wefts and 8 to 12 with Bondings. If it falls out much sooner, something is wrong: too little of your own hair in the bond, care oil at the root or a mistake during application.
- Pain, especially at night. Pressure in the first few days is getting used to it. Pain never is. It shows that individual bonds are too heavy or sit too close to the scalp.
- The hairline moves back at the temples. This is where your own hair is finest and carries the least. Tension in this area leads to traction alopecia, which is reversible if you react early, but not later.
- Bald patches in individual spots. The application was too heavy there or the hair was pulled during removal. This should be checked by a doctor before new extensions are fitted.
For signs 3 to 5: have the affected strands loosened, don’t just wait it out. Why tension damages hair and which four mistakes are almost always behind it is explained in detail in the guide Are Extensions Harmful?.
Hair Loss in the Extensions Themselves
The second kind of hair loss doesn’t affect your own hair, but the human hair of the extensions. With wefts, individual hairs occasionally come loose from the stitching when brushing; with Bondings and tapes this hardly happens, because each hair sits firmly in the bond. Individual hairs are normal. If whole bundles come out of the weft when brushing, the stitching is usually damaged: blow-dried too hot, not sealed after shortening or pulled with the brush at the root.
What helps: brush from the tips upward while holding the root with your hand, have the weft sealed at the cut edge when it is shortened, and never sleep with wet extensions. With good care, the hair itself lasts 1 to 2 years and survives several rounds of moving up. Everything about care can be found at Caring for Human Hair Extensions.
How to Keep Hair Loss Small
- Quantity based on hair density, not on the look you wish for. For fine hair, 100 to 125 g is ideal; more is not better. The table by length and hair density can be found at How Many Grams of Extensions Do I Need?.
- Many fine strands rather than a few thick ones. We offer Bondings from 0.3 to 1.4 g per strand. For fine or thin hair, 0.3 to 0.6 g makes sense, not 1.4. Each bond then carries only as much as the hair underneath can handle.
- Have them moved up on time. The further the bond grows out, the more it levers at the root and the more tangles above it. How often can be found at Moving Up Bondings: How Often?.
- Have them removed properly. Pulling them off dry, flat irons or acetone cost you your own hair. What you can do at home and what you can’t is explained at Removing Extensions at Home.
- A few weeks’ break after removal before the next set goes in. Professionals recommend giving your own hair a rest in between.
When You Should See a Doctor
If your own hair stays thinner even weeks after removal, if your parting gets wider or clearly defined bald patches appear, the cause is usually not the extensions. Diffuse, hereditary and circular hair loss (alopecia areata) have their own causes, and for some forms, extensions are the wrong answer. What fits then, a Topper, a wig or Clip-ins to bridge the time, is explained in the guide Extensions for Hair Loss. The diagnosis itself belongs with a dermatologist, not in a salon.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many hairs do you lose per day with extensions?
Just as many as without, about 50 to 100. The difference: the hairs in the bonds don’t fall out but collect there until you have them moved up. That’s why you see fewer loose hairs in everyday life and many all at once when the bonds are loosened.
Is it normal for a lot of hair to come out when removing extensions?
Yes, as long as they are shed hairs with a root. These are the hairs from the whole wear period, from 8 to 12 weeks in the case of Bondings. What is not normal: broken hairs of the same length or your own hair being pulled out with the bond.
Do extensions make your own hair fall out?
Not on their own. Hair loss from extensions is caused by tension: too much weight, strands that are too thick, moving up too late or incorrect removal. With the right quantity, fine strands and appointments on time, the risk stays small.
Why am I losing strands after only two weeks?
This isn’t normal wear and tear. Usually there’s too little natural hair in the bond, or oil and conditioner have reached the roots. Have your stylist check the bonds before more strands follow.
Do extensions shed hair themselves?
With wefts, a few individual hairs occasionally come loose from the seam when brushing, and that’s normal. Whole clumps mean a damaged seam. With Bondings and Tape Extensions, the hair itself hardly sheds at all, and with good care it lasts 1 to 2 years.
