Applying Keratin Bondings Yourself: Is It Possible?
In short: applying keratin Bondings yourself at home is possible, but we advise against it. Each strand is sealed onto your natural hair with heated pliers at around 190 to 200 degrees, 5 to 10 mm from the scalp, and at 0.5 g per strand, 100 g means around 200 individual bonds, many of them at the back of your head, which you can’t see yourself. If the section of natural hair is too thin for the Bonding strand, it can break. It’s safe with a hairdresser or extensions stylist (2 to 4 hours); what you can apply yourself is Clip-in Extensions. You can order the Bondings themselves from EchtHaar Direkt in the configurator: Buy Keratin Bondings, from 184,33 € for 100 g in 40 cm.
Many guides say “yes, with practice.” Here’s what really happens when you apply them yourself, where it usually goes wrong, and which options there are without a salon.
Why Applying Them Yourself Is So Difficult
| Step | What’s required | Why it fails at home |
|---|---|---|
| Sectioning | A strand of natural hair that weighs about the same as the Bonding strand | At the back of your head, you can see neither the sectioning nor the distance. If the section is too thin, the strand pulls and can break. |
| Sealing | Heated pliers, around 190 to 200 degrees, 5 to 10 mm distance from the scalp | Incorrect heat or too little distance damages your natural hair and scalp, and you can’t check either at the back of your head. |
| Quantity | At 0.5 g per strand, around 200 bonds for 100 g, at 1.0 g around 100 | In a salon, 2 to 4 hours with an experienced hand. Alone in front of the mirror it takes much longer, and the spacing becomes uneven. |
| Curing | No water for 24 to 48 hours | The keratin has to cure first, otherwise the bonds won’t hold. |
If You Still Do It Yourself
- Tools: Bonding heated pliers, sectioning comb, heat protection plates for the scalp, clips. Tools are not included in our delivery, we only supply the hair.
- A second person for the back of your head; on your own with two mirrors, the result is rarely even.
- Fine strands for fine hair: 0.3 to 0.6 g per strand. Basic rule: the strand weighs about as much as the natural hair it hangs from. More in Which Strand Thickness Is Right?
- No silicone and no oil at the roots, otherwise the keratin softens.
Removal and Moving Up
Bondings aren’t pulled out but dissolved: let the keratin remover work for 20 to 60 seconds, then slide them off with the pliers in the direction of hair growth. In a salon, this takes 45 to 90 minutes. Pulling them off dry or using acetone destroys natural hair. You can find the whole process in Removing Bondings: Process, Costs and Mistakes. After 8 to 12 weeks they are moved up; the hair itself lasts 1 to 2 years with good care and continues to be worn.
The Alternatives You Can Really Do Yourself
| If you … | Choose … | Because … |
|---|---|---|
| want to do everything yourself | Clip-in Extensions | in in the morning, out in the evening, no tools, nothing stays in your natural hair |
| don’t want heat | Micro or Nano Rings | the same strand with a small ring instead of keratin, removable at any time; it’s still best to have a hairdresser do the application |
| want Bondings, but safely | Order Keratin Bondings from us and have them applied in a salon | You can find a stylist near you via Find a Stylist. |
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply keratin Bondings myself at home?
It’s possible, but we advise against it. Each strand is sealed onto your own hair with a heat clamp, and for 100 g that’s around 200 bonds, many of them at the back of your head, where you can’t see. Clip-in Extensions are something you can put in yourself.
What do I need to apply Bondings myself?
A bonding heat clamp, a sectioning comb, heat protection plates for your scalp, clips and, ideally, a second person for the back of your head. Tools are not included in our delivery.
How long does it take to apply Bondings?
In a salon it takes 2 to 4 hours, because each strand is applied individually. At home it takes significantly longer.
How long do keratin Bondings last?
Two figures: the bond lasts 8 to 12 weeks until it needs to be moved up, and the hair itself lasts 1 to 2 years with good care.
Which strand weight should I choose for fine hair?
0.3 to 0.6 g per strand. A strand should weigh about as much as your own hair that it hangs from.
Can I remove Bondings myself?
Only with keratin remover and a clamp, in the direction of hair growth, never by pulling them off dry and never with acetone. In a salon this takes 45 to 90 minutes.
Where can I buy keratin Bondings?
Online at EchtHaar Direkt in the configurator, made from 100 % real human hair, 40 to 130 cm, in twelve strand weights from 0.3 to 1.4 g and over 70 colors, from 184,33 € for 100 g in 40 cm.
Conclusion
Applying Bondings yourself is possible, but it’s a job for two hands at the back of your own head with a hot clamp. If you want to do it yourself, choose Clip-ins; if you want Bondings, order the hair and have it applied.
