Weft Guide
Butterfly Weft Extensions made from real human hair: lots of fullness with a flat root
In short: A Butterfly Weft is a real human hair weft with a thin band and high hair density: the hair is folded upwards, so a lot of hair sits on a narrow band, and the row hardly adds any bulk at the head. Like any weft, it is sewn onto a row of small anchors, with no glue and no heat, and it suits normal to thick natural hair best.

What is a Butterfly Weft?
A weft is a continuous track of hair: many strands gathered together along one edge at the top. The weft types differ at this edge. With the Butterfly Weft, also called a butterfly track, the band is thin and the hair is folded upwards. This puts a great deal of hair on a narrow band. At the head, the row still adds little bulk, and the result looks full without you feeling or seeing the root. In short: volume without bulk.
Who is the Butterfly Weft right for?
- If you want lots of fullness, for example for very long hair: for extra-long lengths, wefts are popular because a lot of hair sits on very little root area.
- Best for normal to thick natural hair, which covers the dense row well.
- If your natural hair is at least about 15 cm long and there is enough top hair lying over the row.
- For very fine hair, it is usually not the first choice. The high density can show through at the root. For that, there is the Genius Weft (very thin edge, can be cut freely) or the Feather Weft (especially light).
Which weft types your stylist works with is listed in her profile under Find a stylist.
Butterfly, Genius, Feather or Machine Weft compared
| Weft type | What defines it | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Butterfly Weft | Thin band with high hair density, hair folded upwards. Lots of fullness with a flat root. From 100 g. | Volume without bulk, rather normal to thick hair, not for very fine hair |
| Genius Weft | Pulled through the hair by hand, extremely thin edge. Can be cut freely without fraying. | fine hair, individual head shapes |
| Feather Weft | Especially light, very low weight per centimeter. Falls airy and looks less compact. | very fine hair, natural fall |
| Machine Weft | Machine-sewn, sturdiest edge, thicker band. Cannot be cut freely; the cut edge must be sealed. | thick hair, lots of volume |
We offer all types in 100 % real human hair in 40 to 130 cm (in 5 cm steps), straight to curly. The overview of all five weft types can be found in the Weft Guide.
How is the Butterfly Weft installed?
Like all wefts, the Butterfly Weft is sewn in. First, your hairdresser places small anchors in a row in your natural hair, usually micro rings. The weft is then sewn onto them, with no glue and no heat. We don’t recommend sewing it in yourself. It’s best to leave the Butterfly Weft at full width; if it is shortened, the cut edge must be sealed. It is removed by unpicking the sewing thread; your hairdresser does this too, because otherwise you could catch your natural hair. The hair stays intact and is reused.
If you often wear your hair up, mention it before your first appointment. The rows can then be planned so they aren’t visible in a ponytail.
How long does a Butterfly Weft last?
There are two numbers here:
- The stitching lasts 6 to 8 weeks. By then the row has moved down with hair growth and is loosened and re-installed higher up.
- The hair itself lasts 1 to 2 years with good care and gets through several rounds.
When it comes to care, the row is the sensitive spot: rinse thoroughly, blow-dry the root area along the rows, and never sleep with wet hair.
How many grams do I need?
The Butterfly Weft is available from 100 g, and 100 g makes about 0.6 to 1.0 m of weft. How much you need in total depends on length, natural hair and the fullness you want. You’ll find an overview in the Quantity Guide, or you can get advice: send a photo of your hair in daylight via WhatsApp to Nora, our AI agent, or to our team.
